“OMG!” Please Just Stop.

On ABC we sometimes watch, “Extreme Makeover,” on Sunday nights. When each family member sees the new house they say, “Oh My God!” When someone wins money on TV they say, “Oh My God!” When an award is received on the Grammys, Oscars and the likes, they say, “Oh My God!” When we crown Miss America, she says, Oh My God!” When we hear good news or bad news we say, “Oh My God!”

Please Just Stop.

It has become so casual, society shortens it to, “OMG!” It’s trendy. It’s a website. It’s wrong.  God, whose name is being shouted over and over with mediocrity, has written in his word, “Thall shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain.” It is the third Commandment.

In the Lord’s Prayer we read, “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.” The word, “hallowed,” means to respect or greatly honor.  When we carelessly say, “Oh My God,” we diminish His respect. In addition to the widely accepted OMG, I cannot and wil lnot let people take His name to a deeper place of disrespect in my presence.

Please Just Stop.

In Matthew 18:20, we read, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” God says, “We can use His name to bring healing, to speak peace, and to move mountains!” But we cannot use it frivolously in the same manner we say other common phrases of excitement and disbelief.

Here’s one thing you can do. We read in Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, in word and or in deed, do it all in the name of The Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through Him.” He can equip you to do things better than you can imagine and He can cause you to rise up into His glorious plan for your life. As for casually saying, “Oh My God, do it calling out in prayer, not as an exclamation of excitement.
